Horse Trucks and Tippers for Zimbabwe

Pulling a trailer up and down regional routes is a horse truck’s job. Shifting ore, gravel or sand and tipping it on site is what a tipper’s for. If you’ve been browsing used tipper trucks for sale in Zimbabwe and keep drifting over to horses, you might need one of each.

It doesn’t much matter whether your trucks are based in Harare, Bulawayo or out at a mine. The work they’ll do is what counts, so start there.

What is a horse truck?

Horse is simply the regional name for what UK dealers call a tractor unit: the powered front half of an articulated truck, which couples to a semi-trailer carrying the load.

Type horse trucks for sale in Zimbabwe into a UK site and you’ll mostly find them filed under tractor units. The trailer decides what you can haul. A skeletal takes containers; a flatbed or curtainsider handles general freight. Think about which trailers you’ll pull before you fall for a particular unit.

Horse trucks vs tippers: which should you choose?

Quick rule: if your income comes from kilometres on the road, look at horses. If it comes from loads moved and tipped on site, look at tippers.

How should you choose a horse truck for Beitbridge and regional routes?

Start with the work. Beitbridge belongs in your route plan, but it won’t tell you which horse to buy. These will:

  • How far you go, and how often
  • What you carry, on which trailer, and at what combination weight
  • Engine power, torque and a gearbox to suit the duty cycle
  • Fuel use on your own runs
  • Cooling system, engine condition and service history
  • Tyres, brakes, suspension, chassis and the fifth-wheel coupling
  • Parts and a competent mechanic nearby

Paperwork is the other half. Roadworthiness, customs and cross-border rules aren’t optional, and they get updated, so we won’t quote them from memory. Speak to ZIMRA and a licensed clearing agent while the truck’s still in the UK.

Are ERF horse trucks worth considering in Zimbabwe?

They can be, but go in with your eyes open. ERF is a British truck maker that later came under MAN, and new trucks are no longer built under the ERF name. Anyone searching for used ERF trucks for sale in Zimbabwe is really looking at older vehicles.

At that age, the badge tells you little. You’d want to know who’s serviced it and how often, whether parts are easy to get where you are, and whether a mechanic nearby has worked on one. Get decent answers and an older truck can make sense.

We don’t have an ERF listed right now. People searching for ERF trucks for sale in Zimbabwe, or used British trucks for Zimbabwe, often just want a truck that’s worked in the UK. On the horse side right now, we’ve got two Scania R450s.

The 2018 R450 is a Highline 6×2 and shows 750,398 miles.

The 2016 R450 has the non-EGR engine and a 2-pedal auto box, with 905,000 km on it.

What should you check before buying a used tipper for Zimbabwe?

A tipper that suits one quarry can struggle at the next. Check:

  1. Engine, gearbox and service records. Gaps in the history deserve a question.
  2. Chassis. Look for cracks, bends or repair welds.
  3. Tipper body. Check floor wear, hinges, tailgate and locks.
  4. Hydraulics. Get it tipped all the way up and back down. Oil on the ram or hoses is a warning sign.
  5. Running gear. Suspension, axles, tyres, brakes and steering take a beating on site.
  6. Signs of a hard life. Overloading, rust and battered panels all tell a story.
  7. Fit for your site. Will it suit your material, loader and ground?
  8. Support and paperwork. Parts, maintenance and any inspection documents.

How can you evaluate the total cost of ownership?

The purchase price is only the first cheque. Also budget for:

  • Inspection and any immediate repairs
  • Fuel, tyres, servicing and parts
  • Trailer or tipper-body repairs
  • Shipping to a regional port, the road leg into Zimbabwe, and ZIMRA duties (ask a clearing agent for current figures)
  • Downtime, and the cost of a truck that doesn’t suit the work

Our trucks are price on application, so ask about any vehicle.

Frequently asked questions

What is a horse truck in Zimbabwe?

It’s the local name for a tractor unit, the powered vehicle that pulls a semi-trailer. The trailer carries the load, so one horse can work with different trailers. On UK listings, including ours, you’ll find horses under tractor units.

What is the difference between a horse truck and a tipper?

A horse doesn’t carry anything itself. It pulls a semi-trailer, which is why you see horses on regional and cross-border runs. A tipper has its own body that lifts to dump the load, so it’s what most people use for loose material at mines, quarries and building sites.

Are ERF trucks available for sale in Zimbabwe?

We don’t have an ERF listed at the moment. New trucks no longer carry the ERF name, so any for sale will be older vehicles. Check our live tractor unit and tipper listings, or tell us what you need and we’ll see what the UK market has.

What should I check before buying a used tipper truck in Zimbabwe?

Start under the bonnet with the engine and gearbox, then read the service book. Look over the chassis and body, including the floor, hinges and locks. Get it to tip fully so you see the hydraulics work. Rust and signs of overloading come next, and finally whether it suits your material and site.

Which horse truck is suitable for cross-border routes through Beitbridge?

No one model is the answer. You’re after a horse whose engine, gearbox and axles can handle your trailer and loads, with a healthy cooling system, decent brakes and tyres, a sound fifth wheel and a service history you can follow. Your clearing agent can tell you what the border will ask for.
